All of the works in this show utilized the platform of recycling and upcycling. Canvas, cardboard, maps, telephone books, Yellow Pages, vintage photographs and memorabilia with acrylic paint techniques for embellishment. A paper cut bird from a brown grocery bag.
The houses are made with cardboard and newspaper meant to remind us of those who use cardboard as shelter on the streets. Cardboard, papers, items that are tossed away and forgotten like the lives of many people who are homeless.
Florida is the "Snow Bird" state for northern residents leaving cold climates during the month October through May. Ponce de Leon landed in St. Augustine 500 years ago in 2013. St. Augustine is the oldest city in the United States. This being the beginning of the United States becoming a destiny for international cultures.
This exhibit found viewers studying the many vintage facts they found throughout the mixed media collages reflecting on an evolution of facts documenting the progression and degression from the 1950's.
A particular focus was placed on the changes in the State of Florida. Vintage maps, post cards, letters, photographs were visually arranged to intrigue imaginations and contemplate vacation.
"Snow Bird" which was purchased by the Curator of Education of the Morean Arts Center was the most engaging. A very popular work, this 60" x 60" canvas wore layers of paints, papers, pages from a 1954 World Book encyclopedia. The collaged pieces were arranged into the shape of a large house to act as a reflection on the current homeless population in America. The pages and snippets were arranged to bring thought on major milestones that have changed the shape of how people in America live, engage culturally and socially. With a few political snippets added to ponder before the 2012 Presidential election.
The house shape was softened with embellishments of flight as a paper cut out bird rested as an overlay to the facts.
Most of the pieces in this exhibit incorporated upcycled items. The bird was cut from brown packing paper for example.
